1. Know when to change direction.
Ashar originally came to Purdue to study engineering. One particularly memorable exam made him realize engineering was not the right path. He handed in the test, walked to the counseling office, and changed his major. He graduated summa cum laude in business instead.
Sometimes moving forward means being willing to change the plan.
2. Embrace your weaknesses and work on them.
When Ashar entered law school, English was his second language and he did not have the extensive writing background many of his peers had. Rather than accept that as a limit, he took classes, studied grammar, read books on writing, and practiced.
His takeaway: recognizing a weakness gives you the chance to improve it.
3. Grit matters.
Hard work, determination, and a growth mindset came up again and again. Ashar believes we can keep learning and building skills throughout a career.
That philosophy also shapes how he practices law. "I fight as hard for my clients as I had to fight for myself." It shows up in the work the firm takes on, from business and partnership disputes in Business Litigation to property and boundary conflicts in Real Estate Litigation.
4. Leaders have to learn to let go.
Building a business takes a different mindset than being good at your profession. Ashar talks about learning to delegate, trusting talented people, and knowing the difference between working in the business and working on the business.
Since launching the firm, Ashar and his law partner, Ilya Filmus, have grown Infinity Law Group from two people to a team of about 30.
5. Make time to take care of yourself.
Maybe the simplest lesson from the conversation is also the easiest for busy professionals to forget. As Ashar explains, if you are not taking care of your own health, it gets much harder to take care of everyone who depends on you.
Make time for yourself. Exercise. Plan. Protect time for family.
